Persons of the Bible: Letter V

Bible Persons Glossary V

The letter V represents one of the smallest collections of names in Scripture, but each carries a meaningful place in God’s unfolding narrative. From Vashti’s quiet courage in the Persian court, to the genealogy of Israel’s families, to the father of one of the twelve spies, these names remind us that even brief appearances in the Bible contribute to the larger story. God works through individuals—famous or nearly forgotten—to move His purposes forward. As we explore the names under V, we see again how Scripture honors the truth that every life matters in the tapestry that leads ultimately to Jesus Christ.

Vajezath

Vajezath was one of the ten sons of Haman named in the book of Esther, executed after Haman’s plot against the Jews was overturned.
Scripture: Esther 9:9

Vashti

Vashti was the queen of Persia before Esther. Her refusal to appear before King Ahasuerus led to her removal and set the stage for Esther’s rise. Though her story is brief, Vashti’s dignity and courage stand out in a court filled with pride and excess. Her moment in Scripture reminds us that God can use even a refusal, even an act of quiet resistance, to move history toward His purposes.
Scripture: Esther 1

Vashni

Vashni is listed in the genealogies of the Levites; some texts suggest “Vashni” reflects a shift in family line or birth order within the priestly families.
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 6:28

Vajezath-el

A variant theophoric expansion of Vajezath appearing in later manuscript traditions.
Scripture: Variant tradition

Vedeiah

A variant spelling related to Bedeiah found in sis ome textual families.
Scripture: Variant tradition (compare Ezra 10:35)

Vophsi

Vophsi was the father of Nahbi, one of the twelve men sent to spy out the land of Canaan during the wilderness period.
Scripture: Numbers 13:14

Though the names beginning with V are few, they shine with themes found throughout Scripture: courage in the face of pressure, the consequences of pride and cruelty, the value of family lines, and the grace of God at work behind the scenes. Even in these short entries, we’re reminded that the Lord builds His story through people of all kinds.

As we turn next to the letter W, the list remains small, but the message remains the same—God knows His people by name, and each name is part of His redeeming work.
