Why Did God Create Us?
God created us out of love to know, reflect, and live joyfully with Him.

In the Beginning
Have you ever wondered why you’re here? From the very beginning, the Bible tells us that God created us in His image — to know Him, to reflect Him, and to delight in Him.
In Jesus, the actual image of God, we see what humanity was always meant to be.
It’s one of the oldest questions in the world:
Why am I here?
From ancient thinkers to children lying awake at night, people have asked it for centuries.
The Bible begins with a clear answer:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1
Everything began with God — not chance or chaos. Life itself came from love and design. Creation wasn’t random; it was intentional.

The Artist’s Masterpiece
Picture an artist with a blank canvas. Every stroke carries meaning. She paints not out of loneliness but to share beauty.
That’s how the Bible describes God’s work in creation. He is the Master Artist, and His favorite masterpiece wasn’t the mountains or the stars — it was people.
“So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female.” — Genesis 1:27
Then, unlike anything else He made, God formed man with His own hands:
“The LORD God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils.” — Genesis 2:7
God didn’t just speak us into being — He shaped us, breathed into us, and gave us His likeness. You carry the fingerprints of God.

Made in God’s Image
To be made in God’s image means:
We can think, create, and choose.
We are made for relationships — with God and with one another.
We represent Him in the world as living reflections of His rule.
“Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.” — Genesis 1:26
We were not made to drift through life but to live with intention — to care for what God made and to bring His goodness into the world. God blessed humanity and gave us purpose:
“Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it.” — Genesis 1:28

God’s Delight
When God looked at His finished creation, He smiled.
“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good indeed.” — Genesis 1:31
He didn’t create the world and then walk away. He planted a garden, made a home, and shared His presence with the people He loved. Every detail — the rivers, the trees, the work — reflected His care. Humanity’s story began not in struggle but in peace, under God’s delight.
“The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he placed the man he had formed.” — Genesis 2:8

The Image Restored in Christ
Over time, sin blurred that image, but God’s plan never changed. He still desired people who would know Him and reflect His glory. That’s why the New Testament calls Jesus “the image of the invisible God.”
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” — Colossians 1:15
In Him, we see what we were meant to be — fully alive, fully loving, perfectly at peace with God. Through Christ, we are invited back into that purpose: to walk with God again, to bear His likeness, and to live in His light.
Reflect and Remember
When you feel aimless, remember: God made you for a relationship with Him.
When you feel small, remember: you carry His image.
When you feel unseen, remember: God delights in you.
Take time this week to read Genesis 1–2. and ask yourself:
What part of God’s character do I see in these chapters?
And how can I reflect that in my own life today?
You are not an accident. You are God’s masterpiece — created in His image, loved by His Son, and invited into His story of redemption.
Why Did God Create Us?
Teaching Outline — Genesis 1–2
I. Opening Thought — Have You Ever Wondered Why You’re Here?
Humanity has always asked this question: Why am I here? What’s my purpose?
From ancient philosophers to children lying awake at night, this longing to understand existence is built into us by God Himself.
The Bible doesn’t leave us to guess. From the very first verse, it gives the foundation for all meaning.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1 (CSB)
God Himself is the beginning of everything — and that includes you.
II. An Artist’s Masterpiece
Picture an artist with a blank canvas. Before the first brushstroke, she already has a vision in mind.
Each color and detail carries intention. That’s how the Bible describes creation. God is the Master Artist, and His greatest work wasn’t mountains, stars, or oceans — it was people.
“So God created man in his own image; he created him in the image of God; he created them male and female.” — Genesis 1:27 (CSB)
“The LORD God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.” — Genesis 2:7 (CSB)
God didn’t speak humanity into being — He shaped and breathed life into us with His own hands.
The first face Adam ever saw was the face of God.Every artist leaves fingerprints on their work — you carry the fingerprints of God.
III. Made in God’s Image
To be made in God’s image means:
We can think, create, love, and choose in ways that reflect Him.
We represent Him on earth, like living reminders of the King.
We are made for relationships — with God and with each other.
In the ancient world, kings placed statues of themselves across their kingdoms as symbols of their reign.
God placed living images — men and women — as reminders of His presence and rule.“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, and the whole earth.’” — Genesis 1:26 (CSB)
You are not an accident or a product of randomness.
You were made intentionally — by God, for God.“God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.’” — Genesis 1:28 (CSB)
Humanity was called not just to exist but to create, to care for, and to cultivate God’s creation — to continue His creative work.
IV. God’s Delight
Genesis 1 closes with God’s joy over His creation.
“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good indeed.” — Genesis 1:31 (CSB)
God didn’t create the world and step away — He stayed near. He looked at his work, including yours, and took delight in it.
Genesis 2 shows this tenderness more closely:
“The LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he placed the man he had formed.” — Genesis 2:8 (CSB)
“The LORD God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it.” — Genesis 2:15 (CSB)God created not just people, but a place — a home filled with His presence and provision.
Work was not a punishment; it was a joy, a way to partner with God in caring for His world.
V. Where Jesus Fits In
Humanity was created in God’s image, but sin distorted that image.
Yet God didn’t abandon us — He sent His Son, the perfect reflection of Himself.“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” — Colossians 1:15 (CSB)
To understand what God is like, look to Jesus.
If you want to know what humanity was meant to be, look at Jesus.“For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.” — Colossians 1:19 (CSB)
Through Christ, God restores our purpose — to know Him, to love Him, and to reflect Him in the world.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 (CSB)
The story that began in the garden finds redemption at the cross and renewal in resurrection.
The same God who breathed life into Adam now breathes new life into all who believe.
VI. Why This Matters
When you feel aimless — remember: God made you for a relationship with Him.
When you feel worthless — remember: you bear His image.
When you feel small — remember: God delights in you.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.” — Ephesians 2:10 (CSB)
You are here by design — not by luck or accident — to reflect the beauty and character of your Creator.
VII. Reflection Question
If every person is made in God’s image, how should that change the way we see and treat others?
VIII. A Simple Next Step
Read Genesis 1–2 slowly this week.
Write down one truth you notice about God’s character — His creativity, kindness, or order.
Then ask: How can I reflect that part of Him in my own life this week?
You are here for a reason: to know God, to love Him, and to reflect Him.
The Artist did not make a mistake when He painted you into His creation.
