1 John Overview
John wrote this letter to encourage believers and to protect them from false teachings that denied the true identity of Jesus Christ. Rather than introducing new ideas, John brings his readers back to the message they had heard from the beginning.
Throughout the letter, John emphasizes three marks of genuine faith: believing the truth about Jesus, living in obedience to God, and loving one another. These are not conditions for earning salvation but evidence of a life transformed by God's grace.

Jesus in 1 John

1 John History

Reflection
As you read 1 John, notice how often John returns to the same themes. He speaks repeatedly about light and darkness, truth and deception, love and hatred, life and death. Rather than repeating himself unnecessarily, John is helping these foundational truths become deeply rooted in the hearts of believers.
Read this letter alongside the Gospel of John. The same disciple who recorded Jesus saying, "I am the light of the world,""I am the way, the truth, and the life," and "Love one another as I have loved you," now encourages believers to continue living in those same truths. First John is filled with the voice of a man who spent years listening to his Master.
Notice also that John beautifully balances truth and love. He never asks believers to choose one over the other. Genuine love is rooted in God's truth, and genuine truth is expressed through Christlike love. Together they reveal the character of Jesus.
The living Christ continues to abide with His people today. He is our Advocate before the Father, our source of eternal life, and the One who is transforming us into His likeness. As we remain in Him, His light shines through us, drawing others to the love and truth of God.
