A Deeper Hunger

Longing for What Is Right

Have you ever felt a kind of longing you couldn’t quite put into words? It’s deeper than just being hungry for a meal. It’s a quiet, persistent ache in your soul for things to be right again.

As Jesus sat with the crowd on that mountainside, He looked at the people who felt that same pull and said: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6)

That kind of hunger is so real. You feel it when you see something broken in the news and wish it weren’t that way. You feel it when you look at your own heart and realize you’ve fallen short of the person you want to be. It’s that internal whisper saying, "This isn't how it's supposed to be."

Instead of telling us to ignore that feeling, Jesus leans into it. He actually calls it "blessed." Why? Because that hunger isn't a problem to be solved—it’s a sign pointing you home.

The world tries to tell us that we’ll feel "full" once we achieve a certain goal, buy a certain thing, or finally get our lives in perfect order. But Jesus speaks directly to the people who still feel the ache. To hunger for righteousness doesn’t mean you have it all figured out. It just means you want what is good and true, even if you don't have it yet. It means you know you need God.

This is where grace meets us.

Righteousness—being made "right" with God—isn’t something we can manufacture through our own effort. It’s something we receive. Jesus doesn't say, "Try harder until you're good enough to be full." He simply promises: You will be filled.

God doesn't ignore that longing in your heart. He responds to it. Through Jesus, the things you can’t fix start to be restored. The peace you can’t reach on your own is given to you in His way and in His time.

The Sermon on the Mount reminds us that longing isn’t a failure—it’s the beginning. A life with God doesn’t start once you’ve become everything you think you "should" be. It starts the moment you admit you aren't, and you turn toward Him anyway.

What if that ache you feel today isn't something to hide? What if it’s actually something to follow?

Your hunger might be leading you straight to the only One who can truly satisfy it. Bring that longing to Him today, and let Him fill you with His peace.
