A Deeper Hunger

Longing for What Is Right

Have you ever felt a kind of longing you couldn’t quite explain, something deeper than hunger? Not for food, but for things to be right again?

As Jesus sat with the people on the mountainside, He said,
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6)

That kind of hunger is real.

It shows up when you see something broken and wish it weren’t. When you feel the weight of what’s wrong in the world—or even in your own heart, it’s that quiet ache that says, this isn’t how it’s supposed to be.

And instead of pushing that feeling away, Jesus leans into it.
He calls it blessed.

Because this hunger isn’t a problem—it’s a sign.

The world tells us that feeling “full” comes from achieving something, from finally getting everything in place. But Jesus speaks to those who still feel the ache, those who know they haven’t arrived. To hunger and thirst for righteousness doesn’t mean you have it all figured out. It means you want what is right, even if you don’t yet have it.

It means you know you need God.

And this is where grace meets us.

Because righteousness isn’t something we build on our own, it’s something we receive. The promise Jesus gives isn’t “try harder until you get there.” It’s this: you will be filled.

God doesn’t ignore that hunger in you. He responds to it. Through Jesus, what you can’t fix begins to be restored. What you can’t reach on your own is given in His time, in His way.

This is why the Sermon on the Mount matters so much. It shows us that longing isn’t failure—it’s the beginning. A life with God doesn’t start when you’ve become everything you should be. It starts when you admit you haven’t, and you turn toward Him anyway.

There on the hillside, surrounded by people carrying their own quiet longings, His words would have settled gently into their hearts.

What if the ache you feel isn’t something to hide?
What if it’s something to follow?
What if your hunger is leading you straight to God?

Bring your hunger for what is right to Him, and He will satisfy it.
